Balance Begins in the Cell: Why Omega-3s – and the Right Kind – Matter More Than Ever 

There’s a quiet truth at the core of human health that often gets overlooked: 
every one of our 37 trillion cells is wrapped in a fragile membrane made of fat. 
That membrane is the gatekeeper of life – how nutrients enter, how hormones communicate, how inflammation resolves, and how energy is generated. 

When that membrane is nourished, the body hums. 
When it’s starved of the right fats, things begin to unravel. 

And in our modern world, we are profoundly starved. 

The Omega Imbalance No One Told You About

The largest global fatty acid analysis ever completed examined more than 590,000 dried blood spot samples and uncovered a pattern that is now impossible to ignore. Across continents from North America to Europe to Africa the vast majority of people have critically low omega-3 levels and an elevated omega-6:omega-3 ratio, far outside the optimal physiological range. (Torrissen et al., 2025). 

Historically, humans sat close to a 3:1 or even 1:1 ratio. Today, many western populations sit at: 

  • 15:1 in the UK 
  • 25:1 in the USA 
  • and often anywhere from 12:1 to 20:1 in Australia, depending on diet. 

This matters because omega-3 and omega-6 compete for the same metabolic pathways. 
When omega-6 dominates, the body shifts into a pro-inflammatory state that influences: 

  • metabolic dysfunction 
  • immune imbalance 
  • hormonal disruption 
  • cognitive decline 
  • cardiovascular risk 
  • autoimmune expression 

The researchers of the 2025 paper observed that low omega-3 status and high omega-6 ratios fundamentally alter membrane fluidity, cell signalling, gene expression, and the production of inflammatory vs pro-resolving mediators. (Torrissen et al., 2025). 

In short: an imbalanced fatty acid ratio changes the entire conversation inside the body. 

The Practitioner Who Tried to Do It With Food Alone

For most of my career, I’ve been a “food first” naturopath. 
Real food, seasonal produce, therapeutic nutrition. These remain the foundation of everything I teach. 

But several years ago, I started to see a pattern I couldn’t ignore. 

Individuals doing everything “right” with their diet were still living in inflamed, exhausted bodies. Their symptoms persisted: brain fog, joint pain, sluggish metabolism, anxiety, burnout, and the immune chaos I now know all too well through my thyroid clients. 

When I began testing omega ratios, the truth was confronting: 

Nearly every client was out of balance – deeply. 
I wasn’t just seeing 6:1 or 8:1. 
I was seeing 12:1… 16:1… even 31:1. 

And these weren’t clients eating junk food. 
These were women and men eating well, cooking wholefoods (most of the time), and doing their best. 

That’s the moment I realised food, while essential, wasn’t enough for this era. 

We are living in a world with:

  • depleted soils changing the fatty acid profile of our food 
  • reduced intake of oily fish and that which holds microplastics and mercury amongst other contaminants 
  • increased oxidative stress from ‘modern’ life 

We simply cannot achieve cellular omega balance through diet alone anymore. 

And that’s when Balance Oil entered my clinical world.
